Fundamental or Multiplicative Counting PrincipleThis is a featured page

The process of finding a combination of choices is a task.

Each break in the task where a choice must be made is a stage.

If a task is made up of multiple stages, with separate choices in each stage, the total number of ways of doing the task is calculated by m x n x p x

m = number of choices in the first stage
n = number of choices in the second
p = number of choices in the thrid stage and so on

The pruduct of the choices results in the number of possible ways of completing the task

This rule is only used when the number of stages is a constant.
